How to calculate your final grade
The arithmetic behind every calculator on this site, and the assumptions each one makes.
Every final-grade calculation is a weighted average. That is the whole idea. What makes it feel complicated is that syllabi describe weighted averages in at least three different notations, and learning platforms apply them with different rounding and different treatment of work that has not been marked yet.
This page works through the maths once, properly, so you can tell the difference between a result that is wrong and a result that simply used different assumptions from your gradebook.
The two formulas
Write the final exam’s weight as a decimal — 30% becomes 0.30 — and call it w. Everything else you have been graded on is worth 1 − w.
Projecting your course grade
projected = current × (1 − w) + score × w
At 84% with a 30% final and a score of 95%: 84 × 0.70 = 58.8, plus 95 × 0.30 = 28.5, which gives 87.3%.
Finding the score you need
required = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
This is the first formula rearranged, nothing more. At 84% aiming for 90% with a 30% final: 84 × 0.70 = 58.8, so the exam must supply 90 − 58.8 = 31.2 points, and 31.2 ÷ 0.30 = 104% — out of reach without extra credit.
Current grade is not final grade
Your current grade is your performance on work that has been marked. Your final course grade includes everything, weighted as the syllabus specifies. The two only converge once nothing is outstanding.
This distinction causes more confusion than any other part of grading, because gradebooks rarely label which one they are showing. If your platform is already counting an ungraded final as a zero, the figure on screen is not your current grade — it is your grade if you never sit the exam, and using it here will overstate what you need.
Why the weight matters more than the score
The weight decides how much movement is available at all. A final worth w can shift your course grade by at most w × 100 percentage points, and only across the full span from zero to perfect.
So a 10% final can move a grade by at most 10 points, and realistically by two or three. A 50% final can rewrite the outcome entirely. Before asking what score you need, check whether the exam has enough leverage to matter — the final exam calculator shows that span directly.
Results above 100% and below 0%
Both are real answers, and both mean something specific.
A required score above 100% means the target cannot be reached by exam performance alone. The gap has to come from extra credit, a dropped low score, a curve, or a correction to an existing mark. It is not a rounding artefact and it will not resolve itself.
A required score below 0% means the opposite: you have already banked the target, and even a zero on the exam would leave you at or above it. The negative number is the formula’s way of saying “you needed less than nothing”. Calculators that clamp these to 0 and 100 throw away the useful part of the answer, which is why this one does not.
Why your LMS may disagree slightly
Small differences almost always come from one of four places:
- When rounding happens. Rounding each category to a whole percent before combining them accumulates error; rounding only at the end does not. This site rounds only at the end.
- Ungraded work. Excluding it shows your grade so far; counting it as zero shows your worst case. These can differ by tens of points mid-term.
- Drop rules. Whether the lowest score is dropped before or after weighting changes the result, and platforms differ on whether the dropped item’s weight is redistributed.
- Excused work. Excused items are usually removed from the denominator entirely, which is not the same as scoring zero.
A difference of a few tenths is a rounding difference and is not worth chasing. A difference of several points means an assumption is wrong somewhere — usually a weight, or the ungraded-work setting.
Weighted categories in practice
When a syllabus lists categories, work out each one’s percentage, multiply by its weight, and add. Divide by the total weight you actually counted — not by 100 — if some categories are still ungraded.
Homework 92% (weight 20), quizzes 85% (15), midterm 78% (25) gives 18.4 + 12.75 + 19.5 = 50.65 points across 60% of the course, so the current grade is 50.65 ÷ 0.60 = 84.42%. The weighted grade calculator handles this, including drop-lowest and extra credit.
Points-based courses
Points courses need no weights: add up everything earned, divide by everything possible. The catch is that “everything possible” has to mean the whole course, not just what has been marked so far. Divide by the points assigned to date and you get your current grade; divide by the course total and you get your grade assuming zeros on everything left.
To convert a points course into a weight for the final grade calculator, divide the exam’s points by the course total: a 200-point final in a 1,000-point course is worth 20%. The grade percentage calculator does the division.
Extra credit
Extra credit adds to the top of the fraction without adding to the bottom. Five bonus points against a 100-point total is 105 ÷ 100 = 105%. Give those same five points a weight instead and you have not added anything — you have made every other category slightly less important, which is the opposite of what extra credit is for.
Grading scales are local, not universal
Percentages are arithmetic; letters are policy. 85% is a B on a US ten-point scale, a B+ on many US plus/minus scales, and an A under the percentage bands common at Canadian universities. UK undergraduate marks are not lettered at all — they are classified, with 70% and above typically a First.
No single ladder is correct everywhere, which is why every calculator here lets you choose a scale and edit its boundaries. If your department publishes its own cut-offs, enter them once and they will be remembered on your device.

Frequently asked questions
- Do all learning platforms calculate grades the same way?
- No. They differ in when they round, whether ungraded work is excluded or counted as zero, how drop-lowest rules are applied, and whether categories are averaged before or after being weighted. Two platforms given identical marks can legitimately display grades a few tenths apart, and one of them can be a whole letter away if the ungraded-work setting differs.
- Is 89.5% rounded up to an A?
- That is a policy question, not a maths question, and there is no universal answer. Some instructors round to the nearest whole percent, some round up only at .5 or above, some publish a cut-off and hold it exactly, and some apply discretion. If you are within half a point of a boundary, the only reliable source is your syllabus or your instructor.
- What is the difference between a weighted course and a points course?
- In a weighted course each category owns a fixed share of the grade regardless of how much work is in it. In a points course, influence follows size: a 200-point final matters ten times as much as a 20-point quiz simply because it is worth more points. The arithmetic differs, so identify which one your syllabus describes before calculating anything.
- How does extra credit change the calculation?
- Extra credit adds to the numerator without adding to the denominator. Five bonus points on a 100-point total give you 105 out of 100, which is 105%. That is why extra credit can lift a grade above 100% while an ordinary high score cannot, and why entering it as a weighted category instead dilutes everything else rather than adding to your total.
- Why is my required score above 100% when my target is only one letter away?
- Because the exam does not carry enough weight to close the gap. A final worth 15% can move your course grade by at most 15 percentage points, and only if you go from a zero to a perfect score. If you need more movement than the weight allows, no exam score can deliver it.
